Best book ever on how to survive in country living

I just wanted to give a heads up to a great book if you really want to go back and learn to live like our grandparents and a practical guide on all the issues you will face....

The Encyclopedia of Country Living
By Carla Emery

It is very inexpensive and I use it in many areas out on the farm...

I remember when I bought that book, my wife, the skeptic, asked me, "What do you want of that?" Now, I do tend to over do the books, because I think that no matter how much I know about a subject, I can always stand it to know just a little bit more. But, who do I find referring to it more than I you ask? My wife, the skeptic, of course. :-)

I personally like Storey's Basic Country Skills better. I think it's easier to find info you need.

"The Self Sufficient Life and How to Live it" by John Seymour is a nice hard cover book with illustrations. Lots of good information. Here is the Amazon link:

You can see inside the book here (either type in a search word or push 'suprise me' and it will bring you to a random page.)

Oh, thanks for that link! I'll prolly buy the book anyway, just cause I like books (I'm a luddite in spots), but it's great to have an electronic copy.

One thing you won't find in any book is bones.

If you grew up on a farm, your bones and muscles grew to perform the work involved. If you move to the city you will be noticeably stronger than city folk for maybe twenty years or so. After that your bones and muscles have adapted to your new life, which means you are no longer strong enough to do the work. If you try to go back to farm life it will take another twenty years or so before your bones and muscles grow back. Most likely they will never be strong enough again. Just a fact of life.

What a great analysis.

I live in a small city and agree completely about sedentary lifestyles.

The thing is, country living might not be all that much better. My dad worked hard all his life and raised horses upon his retirement, a 24/7 job including taking care of the land. At my age he was not anywhere close to being in good physical condition, and he had a very hard time physically the last years of his life before passing at age 88. I agree with keeping active, just not that country living makes any difference in people taking good care of themselves.

Joshua Piven, David Borgenicht, The Worst-Case Scenario: Survival Handbook

Survival experts provide illustrated, step-by-step instructions on what you need to know fast.
Whatever the situation, whether you're out in the mountains, on board a plane, or driving cross-country, to "survive" means "To outlive, to remain alive or in existence; live on. To continue to exist or live after." After all, that's what it's really all aboutabout continuing to exist, no matter how dire the circumstances.

Peter Darman The Survival Handbook "

Provides advice on suriving in hostile environments and includes tips on shelters, traps, weapons, tools, food-finding, signaling, first aid, and other life-saving topics.

"The Have-More Plan" is a great book too.

Especially if you only have an acre or two. I've learned a lot.

This is so true, I moved to a large city about 15 years ago after living in the backwoods all my life. My new coworkers in the large city asked me everyday do you lift weights, workout, and others questions about my arms and muscle tone. I had never "worked out" a day in my life. I had worked and worked hard every day around the farm and house.

I have now moved back to the country, I now am working off the beer belly I got while in the city.
